23 Confirmed Dead in Los Angeles Train Crash as Inquiry Begins

A commuter train engineer who ran a red signal was the likely cause of the nation’s deadliest commuter train crash in nearly four decades, a spokeswoman for the rail line said Saturday. The death toll in the crash rose to 23, officials said, and was expected to climb even higher.

"We are stepping forward before the N.T.S.B. has had a chance to finalize" its investigation, Ms. Tyrrell said, as investigators for the federal agency were arriving at the site. "Our preliminary investigation shows it was a Metrolink engineer that failed to stop at a red signal and was the probable cause of the accident."

Horrific disaster! I really hope nobody I know was on that commuter train.
